Cancer in the Real World 2

This is the second entry here at www.pharmascholar.co.uk to highlight how cancer can affect people in the real world.

Again, revolving around a visit to the Manchester Science and Industry Museum, this entry showcases the impact cancer can have on everyday people.

It was a stunning exhibit that really took me and shifted me away from the everyday life that I lead to the everyday life others lead who have to deal with and manage cancer.

The piece is called ‘Silent Stories’ and has been prepared by the very talented Katharine Dowson. The work concerns a series of glass sculptures that were prepared via moulds of masks fabricated from patients receiving radiotherapy for neck and throat cancer. A complementary soundscape is available voiced by those patients directly involved. Here, the emotion from each individual is clear and really brings home the impact cancer has on the individual circumstance and those loved ones who support.

In a positive approach to the work, the patients involved explain their memories of the time and life experiences beyond over the last 10 years.

Overall, an extremely emotive display - to be taken in mindfully in person - and one that highlights the importance of understanding ‘Cancer Biology and Therapeutics’ with related application to holistic patient care.

We are proud to display this work here at www.pharmascholar.co.uk
