Example Calculations with Answers
Question 1 – Dose Calculation
A patient weighs 72 kg and requires Dalteparin at a dose of 120 units/kg. Dalteparin contains 10,000 units/mL.
What volume should be administered?
Required dose:
72 × 120
= 8,640 units
10,000 units = 1 mL
8,640 units = 0.864 mL
✅ 0.86 mL
Question 2 – Infusion Rate
A patient requires 1500 mL sodium chloride 0.9% over 12 hours.
What infusion rate should be prescribed?
1500 ÷ 12
= 125
✅ 125 mL/hour
Question 3 – Percentage Strength
A cream contains 4 g of active ingredient in 200 g of final product.
Calculate the percentage strength.
(4 ÷ 200) × 100
= 2
✅ 2% w/w
Question 4 – Creatinine Clearance
A 66-year-old male weighs 80 kg and has a serum creatinine of 125 micromol/L. Using:
CrCl = ((140 − Age) × Weight) ÷ (SCr × 0.814)
((140 − 66) × 80)
÷ (125 × 0.814)
= 59.4 mL/min
✅ 59 mL/min
Question 5 – Dilution Calculation
You have a stock solution containing 50 mg/mL. You need 200 mL of a 10 mg/mL solution.
How much stock solution is required?
C₁V₁ = C₂V₂
50V₁ = 10 × 200
50V₁ = 2000
V₁ = 40 mL
